Useful AI product photography begins with a truthful picture of the item. Use AI to explore a setting, lighting treatment, or composition, then verify that the product still looks like the one a customer will receive. A photorealistic image can still be an inaccurate product image.
In Afterform, organize the original assets and product references in a project. Use a compatible image workflow when it is available, and retain the original source throughout the process.
1. Build a small reference set
Capture the product from the angle you plan to show. Use even light, a clean background, and enough detail to inspect labels and edges. A blurry reference with hidden features gives the model little reliable information to preserve.
Prepare these views where relevant:
- A complete front or three-quarter view for the silhouette.
- A close-up of the label, stitching, texture, or other defining detail.
- A side or open view for geometry that is not visible from the front.
- A scale reference if size relative to a hand or nearby object matters.
Use only the references the workflow supports. More images are not automatically better when they disagree about color, angle, or product version.
2. Separate fixed details from creative choices
For a ceramic cup, fixed details might include the handle, rim shape, glaze color, and printed mark. Creative choices might include the table, surrounding props, camera distance, and light direction.
Write those lists before prompting. If the cup’s surface is glossy, do not ask for a matte product treatment merely because it suits the background. That changes the represented product rather than just the photograph.
3. Start with a simple studio scene
Use the supplied ceramic cup as the product reference. Create a clean three-quarter product composition on a neutral studio surface. Soft light from the upper left, gentle contact shadow, clear separation from the background. Preserve the handle, rim, glaze and printed mark. One cup only, no added text, no extra decorations.
Review this controlled scene before attempting a more complex lifestyle environment. It helps distinguish a product-fidelity problem from a busy-composition problem.
If exact geometry or labels cannot be preserved, retain the real packshot and use a suitable compositing workflow for the setting. Do not accept a false product representation merely because repeated generation is inconvenient.
4. Add a lifestyle context with a purpose
Place the referenced cup on a breakfast table beside a folded linen napkin. Medium close-up at seated eye level, soft overcast window light, quiet morning atmosphere. Keep the cup unchanged and fully visible. Leave negative space to the right. Avoid competing objects or invented lettering.
The setting should clarify use or mood. An elaborate background that hides the cup does not improve the campaign. Keep a clean master image without a headline so you can adapt the copy later.
5. Inspect product truth
| Detail | What to compare against the source |
|---|---|
| Silhouette | Width, height, curves, handle and cap shape |
| Packaging | Label position, spelling, symbols and proportions |
| Material | Gloss, transparency, texture and reflections |
| Construction | Seams, buttons, openings, fasteners and part counts |
| Scale | Size relative to props and the surrounding scene |
| Color | Whether the pictured variant matches the actual item |
Inspect at the intended display size and at a closer zoom. A tiny label error may be invisible in the preview but obvious on a product page. Upscaling does not verify or repair factual accuracy by itself.
6. Prepare versions for their destinations
Create crops for the intended placements without cutting off important features. Check current marketplace or advertising requirements separately when the image has a specific destination. Keep lifestyle concepts distinct from any product listing that requires an exact representation or a particular background.
Save the source and accepted result together. Record what was changed so another person can review the image without guessing. A clear file name such as “ceramic cup — breakfast scene — accepted” is more useful than an unexplained generation number.
When the still passes review, the image-to-video guide explains how to add restrained movement. For a recurring catalog, use the brand consistency guide to carry the same direction into the next product.
